hatelovedesign explained

Why people hate or love a particular design is complex to say the least; reasoning what is good or bad, or successful or unsuccessful design is a subjective and highly personal endeavour. We interact and react to products, systems and services etc on so many levels that it is almost impossible to state any definitive hate/love criteria. It might be that designed stuff has to meet a range of criteria to become loved; as such if a design fails to meet those criteria it can become hated. The words ‘hate’ and ‘love’ might seem extreme when describing designs, but I am trying to discover what it is about human-made things that drive extreme emotions in people. The words ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ do not do justice to the emotional dichotomies that abound in a world of designed stuff. So if you love a particular design (product, system, building, service, space, transport, graphic, website) it might be because it-Works as it is supposed to do (it is fit for purpose)Awakens a pleasant memory (a time, place, event, person)Has emotional content (it makes you feel good, empowered, stylish)Is aesthetically pleasing (you enjoy the way it looks)Is theoretically interesting (it explores ideas and theories)Is affordable (the right price for you)Conversely you might hate a design because it lacks any, or all of these things. The chances are that you have given little thought to the reasons why you hate or love a particular design. By posting a hatelovedesign you will be contributing to an ongoing exploration of what designers should strive to incorporate in their designs, as well as what to avoid. Thanks for your thoughts.
