I find the relationship between humans and the ‘stuff’ they covet, create, use, cherish, display and discard extremely intriguing. As such I am interested to find out why people hate particular designs, but love others. On Friday 18th September 2009, at 10.00pm, I appeared on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of Anthony Gormley’s One&Other project. I used the opportunity to explore people’s design hates and design loves.Anthony Gormley has likened the One&Other project to a ‘snapshot’ of contemporary British culture, an effort to present a living portrait of the British people. My idea for the plinth was to capture and present a snapshot of design and the British people. I asked people to submit their design hates and design loves, along with their reasons for both, on this website. I presented 31 hatelovedesigns on the plinth and hopefully went a small way to discovering why we hate certain designs and love others. This WebsiteHopefully you find the website user-friendly. The fourth plinth section gives informatiohttp://www.webarchive.org.uk/wayback/archive/20100223131553/http://www.oneandother.co.uk/participants/hatelovedesignn about the plinth along with a brief résumé of Anthony Gormley. hatelovedesign explained forwards some thoughts and definitions of design hate and design love. Selection and presentation explains how contributions were selected and presented on the plinth. In my hatelovedesign I present a selection of my possible choices to provide an example of what could be submitted. In your hatelovedesign there are directions to help you to post the designs that you hate and love. After the plinth describes what will happen to the hatelovedesign website and contributions in the future. The me section, well, that’s self explanatory. Finally, Plinth Posters are the hatelovedesign comments presented on the plinth.
