hatedesign - Poorly Considered HousingWe all love places that surprise and delight us.It is disappointing therefore that many major house-builders continue to build formulaic, badly designed, mundane housing estates. They justify their complacency on costs grounds and if someone will buy itthen it must be good enough! The Government's advisors CABE recognise this weakness. They say their reviews of major housing schemes often shows up a picture of small rooms, weak environmental sustainability and over dense development. They say 82% of new private housing built over the last five years is rated as not good enough. What legacy are we leaving for our grandchildren?lovedesign - London Underground MapWith ‘sat-nav’ it is easy to forget about the difficulties that people had when using plans to get around. Therefore, my accolade for a classic piece of 20th Century design would go to Harry Beck, who devised the London underground map in the 1930s. It has all the attributes of great design; it is simple to use, helps millions of people every day, can be upgraded (Beck's design included only 8 lines whereas there are now 14) and has been widely copied around the world. And what did he get for this hard work? five guineas, criticism from his peers and a plaque at Finchley Central Station!

hatedesign - Corrugated Metal Supermarkets…like Sainsbury's in Stoke, represents capitalism at its most exploitative. Cheap to put up and cheap to up sticks.lovedesign - Liebskind's Holocaust Museum, Berlin...an interesting blend of memory and future.

hatedesign - The IronFunctional yes, but my iron symbolises everything I try to get my daughters to avoid - assuming the traditional domestic role and domestic drudgery. Seen as a tool of my job as wife and mother it represents hot, boring Sunday evening hours. And not a little resentment.lovedesign - Ferguson T20 Tractor (The Little Grey Fergie)Takes me back to happy memories of childhood, mine and my children's. Standing in the back box attached with the revolutionary 3 link suspension, clinging on to the wheel arch as Dad hurtled along. A workhorse which entertained as Dad, then brother James came last to 'win' the slow tractor race in the local agricultural show
